Ponton, whose death occurred on Friday, was held at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon, at Emanuel A. M. E. Church, Rev. J. A. Young officiating. Burial was in Mount Olive Cemetery. During the service, Dr. A. C. Johnson, touchingly sang “By and By.” Mrs. Johnsie O. Churchill solemnly sang a favorite song of the deceased, “The Old Rugged Cross.” The pastor paid a high tribute to the deceased’s exemplary Christian life. The funeral was largely attended. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Rachael Tent and Household Ruth. Floral tributes were beautiful and many. She was well known and had a large circle of friends. Pallbearers were Messrs. Joseph Smith, Paul Barnes, Clarence Reid, John Riddick and William Richards. The out of town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Herbert Knox, Masters Herbert and Toussant Knox of Baltimore, MD., Mt Tusie Williams and Mrs. Senie Bonney of Halifax NC.
