All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Diane Renfrow dianel14@gmail.com September 7, 2015, 5:11 pm Norfolk Journal and Guide,Sep 30,1944 Norfolk - Miss Anna Maria Poole, a pioneer educator in Norfolk, one of the founders of the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, and a teacher in this city for 45 years, died at an advanced age at her home, 636 Chapel street Monday afternoon after a lingering illness. Her funeral was conducted at Bank Street Baptist Church on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. J. B. Henderson, pastor, officiating. Miss Poole was a graduate of Hampton Institute and at the time of her retirement from the city public school system in 1925, she was assistant principal of the S. C. Armstrong school. For many years Miss Poole was active in the civic and educational fields in this city. She served as first chairman of the committee of management of the YWCA from 1918 to 1927. During her administration, the residence at 416 Cumberland street was purchased and equipped, also the YWCA center formerly housed at 1622 Church street was opened. The early days of the branch saw Miss Poole giving unstintingly of her time and talent in securing funds for current expense of the organization. She had been a director of the colored division of the Norfolk Community Fund, a member of the Colored United Charities Board and superintendent of the Bank Street Baptist Sunday school.
