October 9, 2005 Jesse Poor, 81, departed this life Friday, Oct. 7, 2005. He was born and raised in Norfolk, but lived in Newport News since 1986. A World War II veteran, he was a Purple Heart recipient. After 30 years of service, he retired as a machinist from the Norfolk Naval Yard. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude Orgal Poor. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Odessa Miller Poor; three daughters, Peggy Edwards of Hampton, Renae Bryant of Poquoson, and Rochelle Chassells of Yorktown; a son, Jesse Poor Jr. of Hampton; nine grandchildren, Chelsea Chassells, Jessica Chassells, Lindsey Bryant, James Bryant, Maddy Edwards, Chris Edwards, Marty Edwards, Jamie Brooks, and Loren Leftwitch; and two nieces, Heida Batten of Virginia Beach and Lise Vargo of Jacksonville, Fla. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9 at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at St. Mary's Cemetery, 3000 Church St., Norfolk, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Randel Everett officiating.
