He was born in Norfolk on Oct. 6, 1930, to Mary and Joseph Portafé. Maury graduated from Maury High School and attended the Norfolk division of William and Mary. He was a Navy veteran who proudly served in the Korean War before undertaking a long career in the construction industry, from which he retired in 2003. He was predeceased by his parents and a niece, Anita Cutler. He is survived by Bettye, his wife of 53 years; his brothers, Anthony and Edward and his sisters, Anne "Cookie" Page and Francis Williams. He is also survived by his three children, Kim Behm and husband, Rick, Bernadette Alcaraz and husband, Gary, and son Maury Portafé Jr. He has five grandchildren, Brynn Portafé, Aaron Behm, U.S. Marine Corps, Bryan Behm, Cole Alcaraz and Kelsey Alcaraz. Currently, Maury's oldest grandson, Aaron Behm, U.S. Marine Corps, is unable to return for funeral services. Our prayers are with him, and also for the men and women who are serving our country, and may we bring them home safely. The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, today from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of The Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Church of the Holy Family with the burial following at St. Mary's Cemetery in Norfolk.
