Portlock, wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, of the 700 block of Firethorn Road, departed this life of Friday, May 4, 2001, at Chesapeake General Hospital. Born in Norfolk, Toni lived and received her early education in Norfolk public schools. Her professional training was done at Norfolk State University, where she received a B.S. degree in English, followed by a master's degree from Old Dominion University. Further studies were pursued at Virginia Polytechnic State University in Blacksburg, Va., where she earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS). During her educational career, Toni served as English teacher and chairwoman of the English Department at Blair Middle School, teacher specialist for Norfolk public schools, vice principal at Booker T. Washington High School, and principal of Lake Taylor Middle School. Toni was a member of Virginia Association of Middle School Principals, Delta Sigma Theta Organization, Chesapeake Chapter Pinochle Bugs Inc. and Chesapeake Bridge Club. Toni is survived by her husband, Herbert S. Portlock Jr.; a son, Keith Portlock; mother, Ernestine Young; one sister, Muriel L. Whitfield; grandmother, Ruth Gray; uncles, Arnett Gray and William Gray; aunts, Muriel Taylor, Evelyn Barham and Jean Wicks; two nephews, Tracey and Brian Whitfield; four sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; one stepdaughter; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and many friends. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Calvary Baptist Church, 800 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, by the Rev. Gilbert G. Campbell. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Graves Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
