Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Thursday, December 25, 2003 
Herbert S. Portlock Jr. departed this life Monday morning, Dec. 22, 2003. He was
born and raised in Norfolk and at- tended elementary schools there. He was a
graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1960. He also attended
Norfolk State University.

Herbert was a Norfolk firefighter for more than 30 years and retired in
September of 2001. He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Christina
Portlock as well as his wife, Toni Y. Portlock.

Survivors include a daughter, Avise Glover; a son, Keith H. Portlock; a brother,
William E. Portlock (Connie); three sisters, Evelyn Cason (Ernest), Hilda L.
McNeely and Barbara P. Langston (Joe); an uncle, William E. Hill; an aunt, Mae
C. Portlock; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also
survived by his mother-in-law, Ernestine Young; a sister-in- law, Muriel
Whitfield; and a devoted friend, Marietta Willey.

Herbert was a devoted father and a happy, friendly and outgoing person who was
well-liked by all who met and knew him.

A funeral will be held Friday at New Calvary Baptist Church at noon. The Rev.
G.G. Campbell will deliver the eulogy. The body will be taken to the church at
10 a.m. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.
