Harry was a longtime Major League Baseball scout and a beloved figure on the Tidewater sports scene since the 1930s. He started his journalistic career in the mid 1930s with the old Norfolk Ledger-Dispatch, rising to assistant sports editor before joining the Navy at the start of World War II. During his four years in the service he played a prominent role in bringing together top major league players to form teams at the Naval Base and air Station in Norfolk. With players like Pee Wee Reese, Dom DiMaggio, Bob Feller and others, the Navy teams consistently beat the existing major league clubs in exhibition games. Over the course of the war these teams entertained hundreds of thousands of servicemen and civilians. After the war, he became general manager for a minor league club in Shelby, NC. In 1947 he began a long and successful career as a major league scout. He scouted for the Chicago Cubs until 1950. He joined the Chicago White Sox in 1951 and remained with the club until 1967, serving 10 years as East Coast supervisor.
