The Virginian Pilot & Norfolk Landmark Wednesday September 27, 1939
William Walter Powell, aged 83, for many years a well known building 
contractor, died at the residence of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. 
W.S. Dawley, 2914 Victoria avenue, Chesterfield Heights, yesterday morning at 
1:45 o'clock, after an illness of three weeks.  He was a native and lifelong 
resident of Norfolk and was the son of Henry and Louise Blake Powell.
Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Georgianna Powell, three daughters, 
Mrs. Dawley and Mrs. J.C. Hunt of Norfolk, and Mrs. N.C. Turner, of Lynchburg; 
one son, E.B. Powell, of Alexandria; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Murphy, Norfolk 
and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Cox Funeral Home, 631 Westover 
avenue, corner Manteo street, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock  The Rev. Frank 
H. Scattergood, pastor of the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. 
Broadus E. Jones, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate.  Burial 
will be in the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery.
