He leaves the following children: Fletcher Powell, John E. Powell, Joseph O. Powell, Charles V. Powell, Mrs. Nora Jones. The funeral will be held from the above residence tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock and interment will be made in Magnolia Cemetery. William Wright Powell was born at Powellsville, Bertie County, N.C., April 15, 1843. He enlisted in Company L, First Volunteer Regiment of North Carolina, at the beginning of the civil war and was later acting orderly sergeant of Company C under Colonel Leaventhorpe, Pettigrew's Brigade, Smith's Division, A.P. Hill's Corps and participated in many of the important battles of the war, including Bethel, Petersburg, Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg, and was wounded in the first day's fighting of the Battle of Gettysburg. He lay on the field five days before he was taken off as a prisoner, and was exchanged at City Point. He was again captured three days before Lee's surrender. Mr. Powell was injured in a boiler explosion about twenty-five years ago, and since that time has been totally incapacitated for work of any kind. He was an upright, honored citizen and a member of Bertie County Camp of Confederate Veterans.
