She was born Jan. 14, 1917, to the late Lewis and Eva Barbee in Norfolk where she lived all her life. She attended Booker T. Washington High School and night classes at Norfolk State College. She was employed as an office clerk at Rogers Jewelry Co. for 16 years and later in retail sales at Ames & Brownley's Department Store before her retirement. She was a member of Queen Street Baptist Church where she worked faithfully with the Senior Missionary Society, the Ida Ewell Missionary Circle and the Pastor's Aid. She was honored as Missionary of the Year for Queen Street Baptist Church in 2000. She was a member of the Civic League, Bible Study and Prayer Services at the Cogic Highrise where she resided for 22 years. Mrs. Powell was predeceased by her husband, William H. Powell Jr.; and her son, William L. Powell Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Eleanor Powell Collins and son-in-law, the Rev. William Collins Jr., of Chesapeake; five grandchildren, Valerie Thomas of Galveston, Texas, Corliss Clark of Germantown, Md., William M. Collins III of Brooklyn, N.Y., William L. Powell Jr. of Derwood, Md., and Laura Fritz of Orlando, Fla.; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bernice Wilson and Marie Venable of Norfolk and Lenora Riddick of Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Dr. Lewis E. Barbee of Greensboro, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Queen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Peter Wherry. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Graves Funeral Home and will assemble at noon at 1441 Plantation Lakes Circle, Chesapeake, for the procession to the church.
