Born in Washington, DC, on August 5, 1922, she was the only daughter of the late Ellen C. O’Neill McDuffie and George E. McDuffie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond H. J. Powell, Sr., a daughter, Eileen Mary Powell, a son, Raymond H. J. Powell, Jr., and her only brother, George E. McDuffie, Jr. Eleanor Powell received her undergraduate degree in Economics from George Washington University in 1944. In 1944, she joined the U.S. Navy as a Supply Officer and served honorably until 1948 when she resigned as a full Lieutenant to become a wife and mother. Eleanor married Ray Powell, a naval officer, in 1948, and settled in Norfolk in 1954, where 6 of her 11 children were born. In 1961, she moved to Ghent and joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was a member for over 60 years. Indulging a lifelong passion for art, Eleanor began taking art classes during her lunch hours while working at Old Dominion University in the Office of Student Affairs and the Student Health Center in the 1970’s. After retiring from ODU, she earned her MFA in 1989 at the age of 67. Shortly thereafter, she joined the Norfolk D’Art Center and maintained a studio where she painted pictures for more than 25 years, fulfilling a dream of becoming an artist. Her paintings can be found in homes and businesses across the United States. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Ann Sharp (Larry), Susan Tolbert, Betsy Powell, and Jane P. Yockey (Patrick); sons, Richard Powell, Michael Powell (Christie), Daniel Powell (Chris), Stephen Powell, and Martin Powell; 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at a visitation on Tuesday evening from 6 until 7:00 p.m. in the Norfolk chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
