Kay was born July 5, 1919, to Alma (Horstman) and James White in Centerville, Iowa. She worked as a savings and loan assistant manager in Hannibal, Mo., for many years and as a legal secretary in Bremerton, Wash. She moved to Norfolk in 1962 with her husband, David Powell and son, James. She was a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, volunteered in the parish school and worked as a single mother after her husband died in 1965. Kay is survived by her son, James (Maria) and a granddaughter, Sierra Kay of Madison, Wis.; nieces, Margaret “Peggy” O'Drain of Richmond, Calif., Elizabeth Barker of Glen Carbon, Ill., and Susan (Ray) Dahlman of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; and nephews, Paul Bartholomew of Fort Madison, Iowa, and Joseph (Kathy) Bartholomew of Warsaw, Ill. Preceding her in death were her parents and siblings, Eva Kepple, Laurine Idle, Cecilia Gray, Helen Bartholomew, Joseph White and Gertrude Ann White. Kay loved life, her family, friends and pets, and shared her joyous humor with everyone. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7800 Halprin Drive, Norfolk, where friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Norfolk SPCA are encouraged. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
