He was a lifelong resident of South Norfolk. He retired in July 1971 as an elevator operator for Cargill, Inc. He was the husband of Mrs. Hazel M. Whitson Poyner of Norfolk and a son of Benjamin Thomas Poyner Sr. and Mrs. Annie Liverman Poyner. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, South Norfolk. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Marie C. Scaleo of Norfolk; two sons, Gary T. Poyner of Portsmouth and Benjamin Thomas Poyner III of Norfolk; a brother, Cecil Poyner of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Miss Pearl Poyner and Mrs. Katie P. Curtis of Portlock and Mrs. C.L. Williams Jr. of South Norfolk; and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk, by the Rev. Harry R. Goodwin of First Presbyterian Church, South Norfolk. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Berkley.
