Preston The death of this well-known and highly esteemed lady which occurred yesterday afternoon will be a severe shock to her many friends. Mrs. Preston was a lady widely known for her amiability, Christian character and lovely disposition. During the yellow fever in Norfolk in 1855 she was an “angel of mercy”, never failing to respond to any call that might be made upon her. Her funeral will take place from her late residence corner of Charlotte and Brewer Streets tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 4 o’clock. The Norfolk Landmark, Friday, Sunday, April 10, 1892 The Funeral of Mrs. Rebecca F. Preston took place yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock from her late residence, corner of Charlotte and Brewer Streets. The Rev. Dr. William E. Evans conducted the services. Of Mrs. Preston it can be said that if good works will count for aught at the last great day, there will be fewer brighter crowns than she will receive. Among her neighbors, of high and low degree, from the hour when as babes they were ushered into life, until (whether through pestilence or from natural causes) the hour of death came, this good woman was always on hand to welcome the new born, comfort the afflicted, soothe the dying, bury the dead, and assuage the grief of those who were left behind. The very large attendance at the funeral, principally of ladies, was something remarkable, when, the quiet, unobtrusive life of the deceased is considered. The pall bearers: the eldest of whom were friends of herself and husband in the heyday of their lives were, Hon. John B. Whitehead, Colonel W. B. Rodgers, Andrew Martin, Thomas Gale, John Day, Charles McCourt, Jules Russell, Judge Legh R. Watts and James W. McCarrick. Interment was in Elmwood.
