VIRGINIA BEACH - John Raymond Pritchard Sr., 80 of 216 Cavalier Drive, retired 
president of Norfolk Southern Railway, died Thursday at 4:40 a.m. in an 
hospital.
He suffered a heart attack Saturday.
Born in Berkley, he was a lifelong resident of this area. He was a son of Peleg 
and Mrs. Mary Collier Pritchard and the husband of Mrs. Lucia Privott Pritchard.
He formerly was active in area and state civic and fraternal affairs.
He joined the railroad in 1906 as a stenographer in the general 
superintendent's office. He later became secretary to the general 
superintendent, secretary to the receiver, secretary to the president, and 
chief clerk of the executive office. He rose to vice president in 1949 and 
became president in 1954.
He was a member and a past junior warden of Galilee Episcopal Church and a 
member of Knights Templar, Khedive Shrine Temple, Princess Anne Country Club, 
Cavalier Beach Club, and Virginia Club.
He was a past worshipful master of Doric Masonic Lodge.
Besides his widow, surviving are a son, John R. Pritchard Jr., a grandson, John 
R. Pritchard III; and a granddaughter, Miss Ruth Carter Pritchard, all of 
Emporia.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments, Laskin Road, by the Rev. Reginald W. Eastman of Ware Episcopal 
Church, Gloucester, and the Rev. Sidney Sanders of Eastern Shore Chapel. Burial 
will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Norfolk.
