Pritchard Dies Suddenly Widely-Known Steamboat Agent Fatally Stricken With Heart Attack P. Mellens Pritchard, general agent here for the Norfolk and Washington Steamboat Company, died suddenly of a heart attack yesterday morning at 10:30 o'clock at his home, 511 Main street, Berkley. He was 63 years old. Mr. Pritchard was widely known in Tidewater Virginia and was active in the church and civic life of his community. News of his death came as a shock to his many friends. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church, of which Mr. Pritchard had been a member since his youth. At the time of his death he was a deacon of the church, financial secretary and a member of the church choir, noted for his fine tenor voice. Mr. Pritchard was the son of the late Peleg Mellens Pritchard, a confederate veteran, and Mrs. Sarah Gibbs Pritchard. Besides his wife, Mrs. Nannette Pritchard, he is survived by three brothers, Samuel J., Wharton H. and J. Raymond Pritchard; two sisters, Miss Kate Pritchard and Mrs. W.H. Butt, and an uncle, John Gibbs, of Norfolk. Mr. Pritchard was a member of the Norfolk Kiwanis Club and the Norfolk- Portsmouth Traffic Club. Serving his apprenticeship in transportation with the Norfolk Southern Railroad in his early youth, Mr. Pritchard later became connected with the Old Bay Line, and finally on September 19, 1907, joined the staff of the Norfolk and Washington Steamboat Company, and remained with that company for the 26 years up to his death. Mr. Pritchard appeared to be in good health and spirits Sunday, attending the morning services at the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church and coming to Norfolk for the night service at Ghent Methodist Church. Funeral arrangements have been completed by the J.R. Williams Funeral Home and burial will be in the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.
