Proctor of Washington, D.C. A faithful Catholic all his life, he served as an altar boy at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Washington, D.C., graduating from its elementary school and finishing his studies at Dunbar High School. He came to Norfolk in 1939, to test for acceptance into the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Apprentice School. He was accepted into the school and served a four-year apprenticeship as a ship fitter. Upon completing this training he worked in both the Norfolk and Brooklyn Naval Shipyards as a master ship fitter. Upon the closing of the Brooklyn Naval Ship Yard, he transferred to the New York City Postal Service from which he retired in 1976. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1944 to 1946, training at Tuskegee Air Force Base and Williams Field, Arizona. For over 20 years he served as a little league baseball coach in Queens, N.Y., positively impacting the lives of many young boys, including his own and that of his daughter, who served as his assistant for a portion of the time. This service was one of his proudest accomplishments. He and his wife, Evelyn, moved to Atlanta, Ga., in 1986. His service to others continued there as a volunteer at a new complex for senior citizens, Quality Living Services, "The Haven." The couple moved to Chesapeake in 1996 where they joined the congregation of the Basilica of St. Mary, Norfolk. He served this congregation as a gate keeper and an assistant in the Eatery. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 367, the Tuskegee Airmen Inc., and the Prosperity Investment Club of Chesapeake. His memory will be cherished forever by his loving wife and children, Evelyn, Emory Jr., Carter, John, and Patricia Proctor; his grandchildren, Justin and Andre Proctor; his sister, Alice Parker; five nephews and three nieces; several grand-nieces and - nephews; a brother and sister-in-law, Drs. John and Beletia Diamond, and another sister-in-law, Rozeal Diamond. He will be remembered most for his indomitable spirit, his wry humor and his willingness to help anyone in need. A homecoming service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Basillica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Norfolk, by Father Dorgan. Interment will be at the church cemetery. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Chapman-Hughes Funeral Home, Norfolk. The family would like to thank the staff of the Palliative Care Program at the Veterans Administration Hospital's Hospice Unit in Hampton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the International Myeloma Research Foundation.
