He was between 45 and 50 years of age and leaves a widow and six children. The funeral will take place from the residence at 4 o’clock this afternoon. He was a member of Lafayette Lodge of Odd Fellows and the member of that society will attend in a body. ********************** Virginian Wednesday September 11,1895 The funeral of Mr. J.W. Purnell took place from his residence No. 8 High street yesterday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. Mr. Rawlings, of Centenary M.E. Church, assisted by Dr. Lacy, of the Second Presbyterian Church. Members of Lafayette Lodge, Jerusalem Encampment and Canton Norfolk, I.O.O.F., to which he belonged, were in attendance. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery.
