Funeral services were held at Bank Street Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the pastor, Dr. J. B. Henderson, officiating. Mrs. Puryear was the widow of the late Frank E. Puryear who was supreme secretary of the Knights of Gideon and one of the founders of “The Lodge Journal and Guide” which in 1910 became the Journal and Guide under the present ownership. A native of Lynchburg, VA, Mrs Puryear was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lee Bass. She came to Norfolk in 1901. She had been sick since Oct. 10. Mrs. Puryear was a member of Bank Street Baptist Church. She was a member of the Deaconess Board, Willing Workers and the Dorcas Circle. She was active in these organizations and faithful as a church member as long as her physical condition would permit. She was a Sunday school teacher for a number of years. During her stay in Lynchburg, Mrs. Puryear attended Virginia Theological Seminary and College. She was past worthy matron and secretary of the Margaret Francis Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Puryear is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Puryear McNair; one son-in-law, Levi McNair; one niece, Mrs. Grace Miller, Lynchburg VA; and other relatives. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with B. F. King’s Funeral Home in charge of funeral arrangements.
