Virginian-Pilot June 4, 1882
About 10 P.M. on the night of February 21st last, William Puryear, a young and 
well-known sporting man of this city, was shot and severely wounded on Main 
street, near the corner of Church, by Andrew O. Elliott. Puryear lingered at the 
hospital of St. Vincent de Paul, where he had been carried for treatment 
immediately after the shooting, until a quarter to three o’clock yesterday 
morning when, after months of suffering, he breathed his last. When he was just 
wounded, it was thought that he could not live more than a few days, but his 
strong constitution alone enabled him to hold as long as he did.

The funeral of the unfortunate Puryear will take place at 3 P.M. today from the 
hospital.
