Quillin whose funeral was held here Monday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m. at Grace Protestant Episcopal Church. The Venerable Richard B. Martin, rector, officiated. Mrs. Quillin died Friday morning, Sept. 4, at 9:30 at her residence at 1631 Willoughby avenue after being confined to her bed since June 24. She had been in failing health about three years, and had lost some time from her teaching position because of ill health. The pallbearers were Hillary C. Wright, Alexander Smith, Timothy Wells, Lucius Robinson, J. E. Newby, P. J. Chesson, Dr. Lyman B. Brooks and Edwin A. Rogers. A native of Norfolk, Mrs. Quillin was the daughter of Mrs. Q. A. Cotton and the late James F. Cotton. She received her early training in the public schools of Norfolk after which she entered Virginia State College, Petersburg, VA, and completed courses for a normal professional certificate in elementary education. Mrs. Quillin was not only interested in professional training, but she pursued courses in other vocations. She completed courses in cosmetology from Poro College, Chicago, IL. She received a B. S. degree in elementary education from Hampton Institute Sept. 1,1939, and her master’s degree in secondary education from Boston University on August 12,1944. Beginning her teaching career at an early age as a substitute at the S. C. Armstrong School, Norfolk, Mrs. Quillin was later made a regular teacher and served there for seven years under the principalship of Rev. Mr. Hill. She asked to be transferred to Abraham Lincoln School, Berkley, because of inadequate heating facilities at Armstrong School. Mrs. Quillin was popular among her pupils and their parents because of her pleasant disposition and devotion to her work. She had a keen interest in teaching and in the welfare of the pupils whom she taught. She was chosen best teacher in a Quiz Kids Contest in 1948. She was chosen along with a group of teachers who had demonstrated special teaching ability to help orientate the work at the David G. Jacox Junior High School in 1948. When the work began, the building had not been completed. The 27 teachers chosen for this work executed a new core program which is now being demonstrated in many public school systems. Having an interest in religious as well as civic and educational programs, Mrs. Quillin was active in Grace Church when health would permit. She served as secretary of the Women’s Auxiliary, and assisted with the charitable program of the church, giving money to help with charitable cases. She was president of the Civic Club of Brambleton. She also held membership in the local chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa, the Norfolk Teachers Association and other civic and educational bodies. In choosing the teaching profession, Mrs. Quillin followed in the footsteps of her mother, Mrs. Q. A. Cotton, who is a graduate of Norfolk Mission College, and took a special course in music at Hampton Institute. Mrs. Cotton taught music a number of years in school and in churches where she served as organist-choir director. Mrs. Quillin began to make plans for her funeral almost three weeks before she passed. She gave instructions to her brother, James A. Cotton, and her mother on funeral arrangements. Besides her mother, Mrs. Quillin is survived by her husband, Arteal Quillin; two brothers, James A. Cotton, head of the tailoring department at Hampton Institute, Hampton, VA; and Clarence H. Cotton, Gary IN, and other relatives. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with Hale’s Funeral Home in charge.
