She was the daughter of the late Eunice Harris Morgan and Nathaniel A. Morgan. She was the beloved wife of G. Robert Quinerly , also deceased. A Norfolk native and lifelong resident, Vanetta was a member of the Booker T. Washington Class of 1937 and a graduate of Virginia State College and Columbia University. A dedicated educator, Vanetta began her teaching career at Norfolk's Dunbar Elementary School and concluded it at Indian River Junior High School after having taught in the Chesapeake public school system for more than 37 years. Vanetta loved music and traveling and combined the two whenever possible. This resulted in multiple trips to her favorite places: New Orleans and New York City. She was delighted to be able to share this love with her students by spearheading some of Hampton Roads' first class field trips to New York City. Upon retiring, Vanetta was not content to sit idly. Having given her life to Christ at an early age, she continued to work tirelessly in the church of her youth and adulthood. She dedicated her time, talents and efforts to such organizations as the "Do All We Can" club, the Mamie E. Gordon Missionaries and the Home for the Aged, now Shepherd's Village in Norfolk. Vanetta's commitment also extended into her community through her active participation in a variety of civic and social organizations including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Iota Omega Chapter, the Norfolk City Federation of Colored Women's Club, the Brambleton Senior Citizens Club, and the United Order of Tents, True Love Tent No. 37. Vanetta will be mourned and missed most by her family whose lives have been enriched by having been touched by her loving, upbeat spirit. She will be remembered as a kind woman who loved people and conversation. A woman who always seemed to be aware of the needs of others before she acknowledged her own, Vanetta will be remembered as someone who truly embodied the sentiment of one who may have greeted you as a stranger, but always parted with you as a friend. Vanetta leaves to mourn cousins, Cordelia Holmes, Ernest Holmes, Eunice Eason, and cousin and goddaughter, Vanetta Covel. A celebration of Vanetta's life and homegoing will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 18, in the chapel of Hale Funeral Home. Viewing will be today, June 17, from noon to 8 p.m. www. halefuneralhome.com.
