(Norfolk, Va.) 1898-1911, Friday, March 23,1900, Page 5, Image 5 The death of Captain William W. Rawlins, which occurred at his home, No. 294 Granby street, at 6:55 p.m., Wednesday, from a stroke of paralysis, which he suffered on the 14th instant, removes from the active presence of business and private life one of our best known and most highly respected citizens. The deceased was a native of the West Indies, but came to this city fifty-two years ago. Shortly after making his home here he was married to Miss Cooke, of this city, who, with two brothers, Messrs. Henry and Adulphers L. Rawlins, and Mrs. Anna Robinson, survive him. Captain Rawlins was prominently connected with the Order of Heptasophs, or S. W. M. in this city and state, was one of the oldest members of Virginia Conclave No. 1 and was for nine consecutive years treasurer of the Grand Conclave, which position he filled with entire credit to the order up to the meeting of the last Grand Conclave in this city, when he declined re-election on account of advancing years. For his fidelity to his duties at the session of the Grand Conclave three years ago he was made a past grand archon. He was frequently represented his conclave in the sessions of the Grand and Supreme Conclave. In his death the order in Virginia has lost one of its most valued and beloved members. He was also a charter member of Wyandotte Tribe No. 40, Improved Order of Red Men, and has at times been honored with responsible positions in that organization. He was a gentleman of quiet and unostentatious manners and sterling business qualities. Captain Rawlins was in the 75th year of his age at the time of his demise. The funeral will be held from the residence at 3:30 o’clock this afternoon and will be attended by members of the grand body, Virginia Conclave No. 1, Friendship No. 2, Columbia No. 7 and Harmony Conclave No. 11, H. or S. W. M and Wyandotte Tribe, I. O. R. M. The services will be conducted by Rev. R. M. Chandler of Centenary M. E. Church.
