The remains of Dr. Joseph E. Read, who departed this life at his home, in 
Currituck county, N.C., on Tuesday last, arrived yesterday afternoon over the 
Norfolk and Southern railway and were interred in Elmwood Cemetery. The 
deceased was in the seventieth year of his age. The services at the grave were 
conducted by Rev. W.H. Edwards, of Centenary M.E. Church. Following were the 
pall-bearers: S. B. Harrell, David Corprew, J.W. Grandy, George R. Whitehurst, 
E.D. Williams, Louis Etheridge, W.E. Thomason
