Reid, 76, of 938 Dunbar street, a life-long resident of this city, was held Sunday, Nov. 19, at St. Mark’s AME Church, St. Julian avenue. Mr. Reid died Wednesday, Nov. 15. He was a native of Norfolk, the son of Charles F. and Mrs. Lucinda Reid. At one time he lived in Cape Charles, where he worked as an engineer at the Pennsylvania Railroad roundhouse for 10 years. Later, he returned to Norfolk and where he remained employed as fireman and deckhand aboard Norfolk and Portsmouth ferry steamers for 32 years, setting a record of reporting late for work only twice during that period. In August 1945, he was honored by the ferry company for long and faithful service. Mr. Reid originally was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, but later joined St. Mark’s AME. He married the former Miss Lina Spady of Eastern Shore and out of the union were born 11 children. Of this number, four daughters and one son survive. His late wife, Mrs. Lina Reid was a minister, evangelist and pastor in the AME Church, so is one of his surviving daughters.
