The services took place from the First Presbyterian Church, and the sacred edifice was filled with friends of the lamented dead, and the services were of the most solemn and most impressive nature. The pastor of the church, Rev. Edward Mack, was not present, being detained at home on account of serious sickness. The officiating ministers were Rev. Dr. J.R. Howerton, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of this city; Rev. E.B. McCluer, of the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, and Rev. G. W. Lawson, of the Park Place Presbyterian Church. The beautiful burial service of the Presbyterian Church was read by Rev. Dr. Howerton, and there were two fervent prayers offered. The music included hymns, Give Me a Calm, a Thankful Heart,” and “Rock of Ages Cleft for Me,” favorite hymns of the deceased, and the solo “One Sweetly Solemn Thought,” by Mrs. A.R. Barcroft. There was no sermon. The casket was covered with flowers, some of the designs being very beautiful. The procession was one of the longest ever seen in this city.
