He was 69. A native of Norfolk, Reilly is remembered by his colleagues as a newspaperman who had a sharp instinct for news and the drive to “get the story.” Said Perry Morgan, publisher of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star: “Charlie liked the newspaper life. He loved The Ledger and gave himself to it. He made it a better newspaper.” Frank Batten, board chairman of Landmark Communications, parent company of the Norfolk newspapers, said Reilly was “well known in the Tidewater community. All of us who worked with him will miss him.” Reilly died in the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital. He had been ill for some months. Reilly, who made his home on North Lexan Crescent, became Tidewater editor of the Catholic Virginian after his retirement from The Ledger. It is the newspaper of the state’s Roman Catholic diocese. He was a member of the board of the publication, of the lay advisory board of DePaul Hospital, and the board of directors of St. Mary’s Cemetery. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. Survivors include his wife, the former Dorothy Minton of Louisville, Ky.; two sisters, Mary B. Reilly and Anne V. Reilly, both of Norfolk; and two brothers, William P. Reilly of Darien, Conn., and John Bernard Reilly of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Another brother, Thomas J. Reilly, a political reporter for The Ledger- Star, died in 1976. The family has suggested that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to either the Poor Clares, 79 Harpersville Road, Newport News, or to the Auxiliary Board of St. Mary’s Infant Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Thomas Nee. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The Rosary will be celebrated Sunday night at 7:30 in Cox Funeral Home Chapel.
