John L. Relihan succumbed to a heart attack shortly before 2:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon at his residence, 241 West Thirty-fifth street. He was 51 years of age. ; Sergeant Relihan had just recovered from an attack of the grip and had dressed to come downtown for the first time in more than a week when he was stricken and died shortly after his attending physician, Dr. H. R. Seelinger, arrived at his bedside. He was one of approximately 25 members of the police division out on sick leave and had planned to return to work today, it was learned. Sergeant Relihan had been a member of the police division since 1911, and was one of the ablest and most highly regarded members of the department. He had been a sergeant since 1921 and recently had been desk sergeant at the Sixth Precinct, Ocean View. He was the son of the late Maurice and Mrs. Bridget Tormey Relihan, and, in addition to his wife, Mrs. Grace Cardoza Relihan, he is survived by two daughters, Miss Katherine Halbert, of New York, and Mrs. K. Stanley Reid, of Norfolk, and two sisters, Mrs. W. R. Murphy, of Norfolk, and Mrs. Mary Hoy, of Spokane, Wash., and a number of nieces and nephews. Sergeant Relihan was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk and was a member of the B. P. O. Elks, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The body will be taken from the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial avenue, to the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for funeral services tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Rosary services will be held at the Oliver Funeral Apartments tonight at 8 o’clock.
