She was predeceased by her parents, John T. and Katherine Walsh Callahan, and by her brother and his wife, John T. Jr. and Anne Marie Callahan. She is survived by her brother, William Callahan and his wife, Ellen, and by her children, Marie Louise and John O'Hara and their children, Virginia and Joseph; Kay and Thomas Lanahan and their children, Ashley Ballard, Joshua and Matthew Lanahan; Elizabeth and Howard McDowell and their children, Ian and Sophie; James Respess and Wendie Price and their children, Nathan and Damaris Rodgers. She has seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews and a special friend and adopted family member, Zinka Ziebell of Berlin, Germany. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1940, and attended the Norfolk Division of William and Mary. During World War II, she worked at the Fifth Naval District Accounting Office. She was married to James Respess in 1945, and moved to Charlottesville. She was active on several boards, including the University of Virginia Hospital Auxiliary, United Way, Information and Referral, Mental Health and Red Cross. She also worked with the Focus Flea Market and the Martha Jefferson Hospital Auxiliary. She and her friend, Kay Hollifield, opened The Yarn Shop in 1974, a business that they ran for 14 years. She was a member of Holy Comforter Catholic Church. The funeral Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Sunday, June 22, at 4 p.m. by the Rev. Father John J. Dorgan with interment Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery by the Rev. Daniel N. Klem. The family will recite the rosary in the Norfolk chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Saturday at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Edmarc Hospice for Children or to a charity of one's choice. The family would like to thank the staff at the Colonnades, Hospice of the Piedmont and University of Virginia's Palliative Care Unit and the NN ICU for their gracious and compassionate care.
