D. Rhodes, Aged 92, Dies Former Steamship Man Also Was Member of City Council Samuel Davis Rhodes, a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., but a resident of Norfolk for the past 70 years, died yesterday morning in Lakeland, Fla., after an illness of a year. He was 92 years old. Mr. Rhodes was the son of the late Capt. Jesse McCoy Rhodes, of the Confederate States Navy, and Sarah Davis Rhodes. He was connected with the Old Dominion Steamship Company (now Eastern Steamship Company) for 42 years, advancing from assistant cashier to agent. Upon his retirement 30 years ago he was presented a silver loving cup. The deceased took an active part in civic affairs and was at one time a member of the Norfolk City Council. He was a member of the Freemason Street Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class. He also belonged to Pocahontas Council, Royal Arcanum, in which he held office until his recent illness. He married Miss Allie Halstead, of Norfolk, who died 11 years ago. Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. Leigh Gordon Sykes, of Norfolk; Miss Maude Halstead Rhodes and Mrs. James R. Thompson, formerly Miss Nina Livermore Rhodes, at one time a member of the news staff of the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, both of Lakeland, Fla., and one brother, Capt. Jesse T. Rhodes, of Plymouth, N.C. The body will arrive here Friday and will be taken to the Oliver Funeral Home pending funeral. ***************************** Additional info in another article includes a half brother, Henry B.
