Cmdr. Charlie A. Rice Jr. died Dec. 22, 1998, in a local hospital following a brief illness. He had resided in Norfolk for the last 46 years. Mr. Rice was born in Elbert County, Ga., in 1908. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1926 and served until 1956. During his career in the Navy, he served on many ships now famous in Navy annals. Among them were the Langley, Marblehead and Indianapolis. During World War II, he saw service in the North Atlantic and the South Pacific with a combat utility battalion servicing the U.S. Marine Corps. He was commissioned in 1940 and retired after serving at the Little Creek Amphibious Base. Mr. Rice was a charter member of the Medical Service Corps of the Navy. Following his Naval career, Mr. Rice was associated with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., serving as a Certified Life Underwriter for 15 years, retiring in 1971. Mr. Rice was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Norfolk, where he served on the parish council for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 367 and the Fourth Degree Assembly of Fr. M.J. O'Keefe. He was a member in good standing of the Fleet Reserve Association. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucy V. Rice; a son, retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Charles A. Rice III, of Norfolk; grandsons, Mark S. Rice, of Richmond and Dennis C. Rice, of Norfolk; granddaughters, Cheryl A. Jennings, of Powhatan, Va., and Christine L. Garland, of Norfolk; sisters, Ludie Wright, of Little Rock, Ark., and Margaret Pierce, of Conyers, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Carie Eckroade Jennings and Coleman Jennings of Powhatan. He was predeceased this year by his grandson, Michael Rice. A Mass of Christian Resurrection will be celebrated at Christ the King Church in Norfolk at 11 a.m. today. Interment will be in the family plot at St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk, following the service. Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge. A kind and gentle man, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was most definitely one of a kind.
