Charlie A. Rice Jr., U.S. Navy retired, died Nov. 10, 2005, at home after an extended illness of natural causes. She is survived by her son, Charles A. Rice III, and wife, Ruth, of Virginia Beach, and her grandchildren, Mark S. Rice and wife, Ho-Jung, of Pusan, Korea, Cheryl A. Jennings, and husband, David, of Powhatan, Va., Dennis C. Rice, and wife, Christine, of Norfolk and Christine L. Garland, and husband, Brent, of Baltimore, Md.; her great-grandchildren, Carie Eckroade, of Chicago, Ill., and Coleman P. Jennings, of Powhatan. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard E. Rice; grandson, Michael R. Rice; and her brother, James B. Smith. Mrs. Rice was a member of Christ the King Church and parish since 1952. She was a past president of the Christ the King Women's Club, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters Court of the Holy Spirit No. 2145 and an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus Council 367. During her husband's naval service, Mrs. Rice was active in the Navy Wives Club Programs, serving locally as president of the June Glunt Navy Wives Club during World War II. Mrs. Rice graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Norfolk. She married her husband, Charlie, in 1930, and continued a romance that lasted since that time, interrupted by his death in 1998, and to be resumed with him in heaven after seven long years. She had been for all her life a gracious lady and Mother, but always Paps' companion. The family wishes to thank Rebecca Smith and Joan P. Wyrick for the loving care and concern tendered to her by them during a very difficult period. A Wake and Rosary service will be celebrated today at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. by Father Brian Rafferty at the church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Norfolk.
