Rice, 40, of the 400 block of Warren St., died at home Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Mr. Rice had resided in the Tidewater area since 1976. He was born in San Angelo, Texas, when his parents were on military duty there. He attended schools in Texas, Virginia, Alabama, Italy and Nebraska prior to moving to Norfolk. He attended Bellevue Junior College in Bellevue, Neb., and Old Dominion University. Mr. Rice was an Eagle Scout at the age of 14 in Montgomery, Ala., and a member of the Order of the Arrow there. In recent years he had been very active in coaching youth teams in soccer and softball. Mr. Rice held an Emergency Medical Technician Certification. He was a firefighter with the Hampton Fire Department and was a graduate of the Tidewater Regional Fire Academy. He served from 1980 until 1992 when he was medically retired. He was a member of Local 2490 of the Firefighters Union. He was proudest of having delivered a baby in 1984, while serving on ambulance duty with the fire department. In 1984, Mr. Rice graduated from the Paul Hennings Radio School and received his FCC Broadcaster's license shortly thereafter. He worked on the student station at York High School, voluntarily until his fire department retirement. He was employed part-time as an intern by WNIS, Norfolk, in 1994. Following this, he worked at WRAR in Tappahanock for several months as announcer and producer until returning to WNIS/WTAR in 1995 as a part-time staff announcer where he was known as "Mike the Fireman." He was frequently the station board operator for Admirals and Tides games braodcast by these stations. In recent months, he had served as a volunteer for Hope House Foundation. Mr. Rice was active in the Langley Christian Church in Hampton for the last several years. Mr. Rice is survived by his parents, Charles and Janet Rice of Norfolk; his sisters, Mrs. Cheryl Jennings, and husband, David, of Powhatan, Mrs. Christine Garland, and husband, Brent, of Williamsburg; two brothers, Mark S. Rice, of Richmond, Dennis C. Rice, of Norfolk; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Rice Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Ormando J. Leombruno, both of Norfolk; his great-uncle, James B. Smith; his aunts, Caroline Leombruno of New York, and Mrs. Diane Wyatt and husband, Rick of Norfolk; his niece, Carie Eckroade-Jennings; nephew, Coleman Jennings; and many local cousins and great-aunts; and cousins in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and New York. A Christian Wake service will be held in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. at 7 p.m. today. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and will proceed to St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery for a 2 p.m. graveside service conducted by Father Brian Rafferty and the Rev. Matt Scott. Memorial donations may be made to the Hope House Foundation of Norfolk. A kind and loving son and brother, he will be remembered in the hearts of his family and friends.
