Col. Timothy Robert Rice, 88, of the 5300 block of Count Turf Road, died Dec. 14, 1997, in his residence. He was born in Salem, Mass., on Jan. 9, 1909. During Lt. Col. Rice's distinguished career as an army infantry officer, which spanned 28 years, he served in World War II and the Korean conflict. Among his many military awards and declarations are the Silver Star, Bronze Star, the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters and the Combat Infantry Badge with Star. His last duty station was Headquarters U.S. Army Military adviser group in Kearny, N.J. He retired June 20, 1957. He was then employed by the City of Norfolk and worked in the Domestic and Juvenile Court as a probation officer and also as a court statistician, and retired after 19 years of service. Lt. Col. Rice was a member of Church of the Ascension Catholic Church of Virginia Beach and the Retired Officers Association. He was preceded in death by his only children, his son, Edward Robert Rice, in 1984, and his daughter, Winifred Rice Rampey, in 1992. Survivors include by his wife, Winifred Fox Rice of Virginia Beach; a sister, Gertrude Tilton of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Wendy Lynn Rampey Bowers of Northern Virginia, William Robert Rampey of Chicago, and Walter Edward Rampey of Northern Virginia; a niece, Shirley Dickerson of Norfolk. A Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Church of the Ascension Catholic Church by Father James E. Parke. The family will be at the church to receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. before the Mass. Burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery with military honors. H.D.
