Born March 9, 1923, in Oak Park, Ill., he spent his early childhood in South Africa at the Mapurnulo Mission Station in Natal, where his father, an ordained minister of the Congregational Church, was assigned as a missionary. He returned to the United States in 1934, and his teenage years were spent in Oklahoma and South Dakota. Link was drafted in 1943 and was assigned to the Navy. After various tours of duty and school, he was commissioned as an ensign in July 1945. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech in the '50s, graduating with highest honors. His career was spent at Bell Telephone Laboratories in New Jersey, where he joined the newly organized department which planned new data communication capabilities using the telephone network to provide services to meet the communication needs of the emerging computers and associated terminals. He was active in many church, civic and social organizations. He was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. After living in New Jersey for 37 years, he returned to his wife's home state and had been living in Williamsburg since 1991. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ashley Hudgins Rice; three children, Margaret R. Rice, Judith R. Lefebvre and Randolph L. Rice; three grandchildren, Tim, Laura and Leslie Lefebvre; and three sisters, Cynthia McCrae, Helen Pickett and Julia Mark.
