On January 4, 2024, BERTHA ORPHE RICHARD passed away. She was the beloved wife 
of the late H. Marks S. Richard, Jr., loving mother of Howard Marks Richard III 
(Renee) and Robert Lawrence Richard and devoted grandmother of 4 grandchildren.
Bertha O. Richard was born to Robert and Cora Orphe in Saint Martin Parish, 
Louisiana, on October 13, 1937. She was the youngest of five children. She was a 
professor of Biology at Norfolk State University from 1972 until she retired in 
2003. She was a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and an active member 
of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
A viewing will be held on Monday, January 22, 2024, from 3:00pm-6:00pm at 
Metropolitan Funeral Service, 120 West Berkley Avenue, Norfolk, VA. A funeral 
service will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 11:00am at The Basilica of 
Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception, 232 Chapel Street, Norfolk, VA. 
Interment will be at Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 3000 Church Street, 
Norfolk, VA.
