An honor guard from the Norfolk Naval Base gave him the three volleys of farewell and stood, silent and thoughtful, while the flag draped casket was lowered in to the grave. The deceased died Friday, Nov. 19, at 6:10 p.m. in Worcester, MA, where he was in school. He had taken up the study of electronics after his discharge from the Navy to offset his interrupted collegiate course at Virginia State College. Mr. Riddick was a product of the Booker T. Washington High School and the John T. West Elementary School. It was in high school that he was rated as an outstanding player in football and basketball under Coach Van Buren Luke. Mr. Riddick used this knowledge later by coaching football at the Norfolk Unit, Virginia Union University, now Norfolk Division Virginia State College. Funeral services were held from the Metropolitan AME Zion Church of which he was a member with the Rev. W. O. Carson, pastor, conducting the services. William Ross and Humphrey Yarrell sang appropriate numbers. The altar was filled with a profusion of floral offerings attesting the high esteem in which the deceased was held by those who knew him. In the church, Mr. Riddick had been active in both Sunday school and the church. He was a member of the Men’s Bible Class and formerly served as assistant teacher of the Sunbeam Class. In the church, he was a member of the Brotherhood Club and the Steward Board No. 2. Born May 19,1923, here in Norfolk, Mr. Riddick had made a host of friends through his many varied activities. Having had a short married life of just 19 months, Mrs. Cleo Hill Riddick, the widow, is left behind mourning. Sorrowing with her are a father, Nathaniel J. Riddick Sr., of this city; five brothers, Ernest of Norfolk, Charlie of New York, David of Philadelphia, Sidney of Kentucky, all of whom arrived, and Nathaniel Jr., who is in the United States Army in Japan and could not come; a sister, Miss Carrie Riddick of Norfolk; two aunts, Madams Naomi Settles and Edna Burden, both of Philadelphia; six uncles, Joseph, Thomas, and Miles Dixon of Norfolk, Freddie and George Dixon of New York and Samuel Dixon of Kecoughtan Hospital, Hampton; a grandmother, Mrs. Rosa Dixon of this city; and a host of cousins, two of whom are Miss Katherine Dixon and Junior Kennard of Philadelphia and Joseph Dixon Jr., who also came from out-of-town. The others who came in for the last rites were: Mrs. Dora Hill, William and Lawrence Hill and Mrs. Paralee Casselle of Philadelphia; Madams Mary Brickhouse and Ann Dixon of New York.
