He departed this life on Monday, March 15, 1993, at Norfolk Community Hospital in Norfolk. He was born on Sept. 12, 1924, in New Bern, N.C., and was educated in the North Carolina public schools. He was raised by his loving sister, the late Estelle Josephine Bell. He was an uncle to all, a friend to everyone and, most of all, a person who loved people. In 1941, Mr. Riley moved to Norfolk, Va. He was employed at the Naval Air Station as an aircraft mechanic. He retired from the Naval Air Station with outstanding honors. Mr. Riley was a loyal and faithful member of the Queen Street Baptist Church, where he was a dedicated member of the original Royal Gospel Singers, the Male Choir and the Gospel Choir. Also, he was a member of the Metropolitan Chorus of Norfolk. He touched the lives of many people with his melodious voice and kind words. He leaves to cherish his memory, two sisters, Lillie Bell of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Hattie Washington of Buffton, S.C.; one brother, Jesse Wallace of Norfolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. God has promised eternal life to all who believe in him. It is indeed a comfort to know Robert had prepared himself for the life beyond. May this thought be a comfort to us who are left behind.
