L. S. Roberts, pastor of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Eastville, were held Thanksgiving Day at 1 p.m. at his church. He died Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. Rev. Mr. Roberts, who officiated at the funeral for Mrs. Mary Ellen Fatherly less than three weeks ago, was stricken Sunday Nov. 22 at the church and died the next day at his home. The minister, who had pastored churches for 20 or more years, was born in Durham NC. Later he studied at Biddle University, now Johnson C. Smith University of Charlotte NC. He also studied medicine at Shaw University in Raleigh NC. His first pastorate was in 1918 at Berryville VA. He pastored some of the largest congregations in his denomination. He was well known in the eastern section of Virginia, having pastored at Mt. Zion, at Nimmo, in Princess Anne county from 1930 to 1938. He pastored at Trinity AME Church in Berkley section of Norfolk from 1938 to 1940. Funeral services were also held for Rev. Mr. Roberts, Sunday, Nov. 19(?), at St. John AME in Norfolk at 1 p.m. with the pastor, Dr. J. R. Johnson Jr., in charge. He spoke of the fine character and excellent ministerial record of the deceased. Several ministers and persons including Presiding Elder R. W. Williams and Charles Jarvis of Bethel AME Church made remarks on the life and work of Rev. Mr. Roberts. Messages of condolence were read by Dr. Johnson from the Virginia Conference Branch, Women’s Missionary Society of the AME Church, and the Norfolk District of the state body, Bethel AME Church, Eastville; and other organizations. Rev. Mr. Roberts is survived by his widow, Mrs. Georgia E. Roberts, (the column is cut off)Mrs. Olive Higginbotham, Worcester MA, and Mrs. Lucille R. Gibbs, Virginia Beach VA; one sister, Mrs. Ora Sneed Lee, Durham NC; five grandchildren, two nephews, four nieces, two sons-in-law, one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law and other relatives. Interment was in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery with Taylor’s Funeral Service of Virginia Beach in charge.
