Robinson died Sept. 29, 1999, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was, until recently, a resident of Marian Manor in Virginia Beach. Born in Raleigh, N.C., she was a retired elementary school principal in Norfolk. Educated in the parochial and public schools of Norfolk, Mrs. Robinson graduated from Virginia State University, Petersburg, Va., and earned a master's degree from Columbia University, New York City. She retired after 30 years of service as an educator and administrator in the Norfolk public school system. She began her career as a teacher and, eventually, served as principal at Titustown Elementary and Young Park Elementary. She had particular interests in science and mathematics curricula for primary students. She was a proponent of community involvement in the schools and an advocate for the special, early needs of at-risk children. She was a member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Norfolk, where she was actively involved in such activities as the Catholic Women's Club. Her civic and professional associations included the Norfolk Education Association, the NAACP, the Norfolk Principal's Association, the board of the YWCA, executive board of the Urban League, Church Women United and the neighborhood association of L&J Gardens. She was, at one time, a Scout leader for the Girl Scouts of America, and regional director of Court No. 1212 Catholic Daughters. She was an avid social card player who enjoyed singing, crafts and reading. After her retirement, she traveled extensively. She was preceded in death by her mother, Hester House; her aunt, Jessie Roberts; and her grandmother, Mary C. Williams. Survivors include her cousins, Bessie M. Steward, Alfred R. Steward, Marian S. Briley, all of Virginia Beach, the Rev. Jesse Morgan of Washington, D.C., Kenneth Nicholson, Preston Nicholson, both of Durham, N.C., the Rev. Eddie Lee Holman and Sandra M. Blackwell, both of Philadelphia; her devoted friend of almost 60 years, Constance J. Coppage of Norfolk; her godson, Dr. Samuel F. Coppage of Norfolk; and a host of cousins and dear friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Tuesday at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Norfolk. Family and friends may assemble at the basilica. There, beginning at 10 a.m., the body will lie in repose before the funeral. The Rev. Monsignor Walter C. Barrett will be the celebrant. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Mary's Academy, 921 Holt St., Norfolk, in memory of Mrs. Robinson's lifelong commitment to the education of children and devotion to the church. Hale Funeral Home, Norfolk, is handling arrangements.
