He was born Nov. 23, 1907, in Norfolk, the second child born to the late Jacob Rogers and Evangeline Marshall Rogers. Mr. Rogers was educated in the Norfolk Public School System graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in the Class of 1925. He received his bachelor of science degree from Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, and a master of arts degree in administration and supervision from Columbia University, New York. After teaching a few years, he was appointed assistant principal at Booker T. Washington High School where he was the first choral director. Music was a vital part of his life. He will be remembered for the excellent musical programs presented under his direction for many years, as well as his love for B.T.W. Mr. Rogers retired in 1971 with 40 years of service from the Norfolk Public School System as assistant principal of Ruffner Junior High School. ``E.A.,'' as he was affectionately called, was a member of St. John's A.M.E. Church, Norfolk, where his church activities were quite extensive: church clerk, member of the Trustee Board, Historical Landmark Committee, secretary of the Official Board, founding member of the Stewardship and Finance Commission. He was director of the Chancel, Gospel and Richard Allen Male Chorus, minister of music, and one of the organizers of the Brock-Hunter Fellowship Group. Mr. Rogers was a United States Army veteran, a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and Kit-Kat Club. Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Geraldine Allison Rogers; sisters, Athelma R. Nix and Frederica R. Ballard; and brothers, Milton F. Rogers Sr. and Frank E. Rogers Sr. He leaves to cherish his memories nieces, Charity N. Harrell and husband, Adam, of Chesapeake, and Mary Ann Richardson and husband, James, of Norfolk; six nephews; seven great-nephews; and many other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday at St. John's A.M.E. Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. I.W. Knight Sr., presiding elder, and the Rev. Larry S. Hinton, pastor. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . The family will receive friends at the home of Adam and Charity Harrell, 228 Fernwood Farms Road, Chesapeake. Memorial donations may be made to St. John's A.M.E.
