Adrienne M. Rooks died Feb. 23, 1999, at the age of 74.

Born in New Orleans, La., she was a former resident of Norfolk, Washington,
D.C., and Chicago, Ill., before relocating to New Jersey. She had worked for the
Norfolk Journal Guide in Norfolk and as a school teacher in Washington, D.C.,
where her husband, the Rev. Dr. Charles Shelby Rooks , was pastor of the Lincoln
Memorial Congregational Church. She was active in civic affairs in Chicago where
her husband served as president of the Chicago Theological Seminary. She was a
music teacher and director of the Junior High School Choir for the Hightstown
Board of Education in New Jersey, retiring in 1974 after 14 years of service.

Mrs. Rooks was a member of the United Church of Christ, Congregational, in
Plainfield, N.J. She was a charter member of CHUMS, Inc., Norfolk, and a charter
member of the Raritan Valley Chapter of The Links Inc., Plainfield. She was also
a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Dr. Charles Shelby Rooks of the home;
two sons, Laurence G. Rooks of Phoenix, Ariz., and William P. Evers of
Milwaukee, Wis.; a daughter, Carol Ann Rooks of Towson, Md.; a brother, Albert
J. Martinez of New Orleans; a sister, Lastinia Warren of California; and seven
grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Church of
Christ, Congregational, 220 W. 7th St., Plainfield, by the Rev. James Colvin.
Anderson Funeral Service is handling arrangements.
