ROPER, 101, PAST NORFOLK CHURCH LEADER Mrs. Rose Bruce Roper, 101, the widow of William B. Roper and a former church, civic and cultural leader of Norfolk, died Monday at 11:15 a.m. She was born in Abingdon, Va., June 1, 1873, a daughter of Garland S. and Mrs. Elizabeth H. Bruce. The family moved to Wytheville, where she spent her childhood, and then to Norfolk when she was a young girl. She was a graduate of Norfolk College for Young Ladies. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, where she was active for more than 60 years. She was a charter member of the Circle of Service, the first King's Daughters Circle formed in Norfolk, which she served for 80 years. She also belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy and Garden Club of Norfolk. She is survived by two daughters, Miss Lydia B. Roper of Virginia Beach and Mrs. King Whitney of Norfolk; a granddaughter, Mrs. Fredrik Forsberg of Norfolk; a grandson, Robert N. Koolage Jr. of Richmond and five great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments with burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
