Mrs. Roper was born in Norfolk, the daughter of the late William Tudor Freeman and Olive Herbert Freeman. She was predeceased by two sisters, Martha F. Johnston and Constance F. Griffin. Her family owned and operated the Freeman Bookstore on Granby Street, which was a landmark for many years. Mrs. Roper was an active member of the Garden Club of Norfolk, a sustainer of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach and a benefactor of Tidewater Community College. She was a lifelong Episcopalian. Survivors include her husband, George Wisham Roper II of Norfolk; a niece, Ellen J. Travelstead and her husband, Jack G. Travelstead, of James City County; and a nephew, Richard L. Johnston of Virginia Beach. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Ross Wright and Rev. George D. Heath. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Tidewater Community College, 121 College Place, Norfolk, VA 23510.
