Ruffin, which occurred at 6 o'clock p.m. yesterday at his residence, Bermuda Street, Norfolk has lost one of her most popular and respected citizens, and the press a representative who was an honor to journalism. As a reporter and editor he was always reliable, always industrious, and his thoughts were invariably clothed in the best and most appropriate English. He was greatly instrumental in founding THE VIRGINIAN, and was one of its original owners, and for several years its city editor. When he severed his connection with the VIRGINIAN, he accepted the position of city editor of the PUBLIC LEDGER, which he held up to the time of his death, having been connected with the press of this city for a quarter of a century. When the South seceded from the Union, he was engaged upon the staff of the Memphis APPEAL. He at once laid aside his pen to take up the sword in in defence of his country, and from Tennessee he came to Virginia and enlisted in the Twelfth Virginia regiment. Through all the trials, sufferings and privations of the Civil War, his record was that of duty well performed. He was a gallant soldier, a true man, and at the time of his death was an honored member of the Pickett-Buchanan Camp of Co Confederate Veterans. Many years ago he married a daughter of the late J. K. Hodges. His wife and a daughter survive him. Major Ruffin, who, at the time of his death, was 57 years of age, of late has been a great sufferer, and since last January has been constantly confined to his room. The funeral will take place Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
