R. C. RUGGIERI, 85, DIES; FORMER ITALIAN CONSUL HERE Dr. Rosario C. Ruggieri, 85, retired Norfolk physician and civic leader who for many years was Italian consular agent for Virginia, died Friday at 3:50 a.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.I. James, in Eastville, Northampton County. A native of Caltanissetta, Italy, he had practiced medicine in Norfolk for 54 years at his retirement a year ago. He had been a physician 60 years, obtaining his medical diploma from the University of Naples in July 1899. He was a son of Pietro and Mrs. Biagia Andriani. His father was engaged in general commerce. Dr. Ruggieri became a ship's surgeon and resided in New York City for one year after receiving his citizenship papers. He came to Norfolk in 1905 and passed the Medical State Board examination in Richmond August 1905. Earlier in May 1901 in Naples, he was married to Adeline G. Ruggieri, who died some years ago. He served as consular agent for Italy from 1925 until 1941 when the consulate at Colonial and Shirley Avenues was closed five months before this country's entry into World War II. The consulate was re-opened in 1948. Dr. Ruggieri was awarded the Cross of the Cavalier, merit order of the Italian Republic, in impressive ceremonies at Baltimore in 1957. He was a member of the Italian Benevolent Society, the Norfolk County Medical Society and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Surviving besides Mrs. James of Eastville are one other daughter, Mrs. Kenneth R. Redden of Charlottesville; two sons, Peter W. Ruggieri of Norfolk and Edmond A. Ruggieri of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Mrs. Joe L. Tessitore of Wilmington, Del., Mrs. J.J. Wulzer of Norfolk and Mrs. Ciulli Ruggieri of Rome, Italy, and 10 grandchildren. The body was taken to Cox Funeral Home and will be taken to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a funeral service Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. A rosary service will be at Cox Funeral Home Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ************************************************************************* NORFOLK - The body of Dr. Rosario Carlo Ruggieri, well-known Norfolk physician and former Italian consul here, who died Friday morning in Eastville, will be taken from Cox Funeral Home to Sacred Heart Catholic Church where a funeral service will be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
