Mrs. Russell, a Norfolk native, retired from Oakwood Elementary School in 1967. She was the widow of Roland E. Russell Sr. and a member and steward of St. John's A.M.E. Church. She was a member of the National Education Association and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Survivors include four daughters, Edith R. Wilder, Vivian R. Wood and Hortense R. Spence, all of Virginia Beach, and Grace R. Ponton of Richmond; five sons, Milton E. Russell and Horace M. Russell, both of Chesapeake, Leonard A. Russell, Roland E. Russell and Earl H. Russell, all of Virginia Beach; 44 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in St. John's A.M.E. Church by the Rev. I.W. Knight Sr. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Friends may join the family at the residence. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday. Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
