Leona M. Russell , 65, of the 200 block of Filbert St., a Virginia Beach school 
teacher of Science, died March 22, 1993, in a local hospital. 

Mrs. Russell was a native of Norfolk. She completed Norfolk Elementary School 
and Booker T. Washington High School. She was a graduate of Elizabeth City State 
University in Elizabeth City, N.C., receiving her B.S. degree in Elementary 
Education. She received her Masters of Science degree from Old Dominion 
University in Norfolk, with a continuing education to a Doctorate at Norfolk 
State University and Hampton University. She was a member of Queen Street 
Baptist Church, a member of the Eastern Star, member of Zeta Phi Beta Theta 
Sigma Sorority, president of the Bollingbrook Civic League, member of the 
Norfolk City Democratic Committee, National Education Association, Virginia 
Beach Education Association and the Norfolk Crime Prevention Unit. 

Survivors include her husband, Leo Russell ; a son, Julien G. Patterson of 
Northern Virginia; two sisters, Mildred S. Green and Peggy S. Land, both of 
Virginia Beach; two brothers, William A. Chasten of El Paso, Texas, and Austin 
E. Simpson of Durham, N.C.; a granddaughter, Tracee Patterson-Falconer; and one 
great-granddaughter, Allesandra Falconer, both of Norfolk; and several relatives 
and friends. 

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Queen Street Baptist 
Church by the Rev. Peter M. Wherry. Burial will be in the Calvary Annex 
Cemetery. Graves Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Friends may join the 
family at the home. 

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
