Death of an Old Citizen
Mr. Matthew Ryan, an aged and respected citizen, died at his residence, 38 Fayette 
street, at a late hour Thursday night, after a painful illness. He was a native of 
Ireland, but has lived in Norfolk since 1856. He leaves a wife and six children, 
who have the sympathies of their many friends. Mr. Ryan was very successful in 
business and had many warm and personal friends. At the time of his death, he was 
in the fifty-seventh year of his age. His funeral will take place from St. Mary’s 
Catholic Church this morning at 9 o’clock.
