Norfolk Virginian August 26, 1896  

RYAN - In this city, at the residence of his uncle, D. Ahern, No. 277 Church 
Street, at 10:45 o'clock p.m., August 24th, 1896, JOHN J. RYAN, aged 16 years, 
younger son of Edward and the late Catherine Ryan, of New York.
Funeral from above residence THIS (Wednesday) AFTERNOON  at 3 o'clock.

The funeral of John J. Ryan, the 16-year-old son of Mr. Edward Ryan, of New 
York, who died at the residence of his uncle, Mr. D. Ahern, No. 277 Church 
Street, Monday, was held at the residence yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The 
services were conducted by Father John Doherty, of St. Mary's Catholic Church, 
and the interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery. The deceased's father was in 
attendance upon the obsequies, he having arrived from New York via the New York, 
Philadelphia and Norfolk railroad yesterday morning.
